I woke up one day wondering what would happen to everything around me if I just wore my hair the way that it grew. Would I lose my job? Would men still find me attractive? It seems silly now that I'm looking back, but those were serious concerns that I had at the time. I watched natural hair journey videos on youtube for a few months before I decided just to shave all my hair off. I did the big chop before I knew what the big chop was.
The big chop was the most empowering decision that I made as a young adult. I was ready to start my natural hair journey. I still had a few insecurities, but I was prepared to step out of my comfort zone. I remember looking up books and watching natural hair youtube videos until I got it right. It took some time, but I was patient. I loved myself through all the people that made fun of me, the hairstylist that would try to get me to relax my hair, and just the emotional journey that came with embracing my texture. I was 23 years old, can you believe there were adults making fun of me for going natural? I laugh at how amazed they were once I was two years in and had big kinky curly hair. I was patient and persistent.
I am the crown coach, I coach and educate ladies and gents about their natural hair. I didn't have a coach or someone pushing me to embrace my texture. I wonder how often little boys and girls are forced to be apart of what society deems “presentable.” I wonder how many are discouraged when they try to embrace their texture. I created the Kinky Kurly Krew community around people finding confidence in their texture and themselves. I educate Kinky Kurlies on how to determine their hair profile and care for their hair once they learn about their profile. Knowing and understanding your hair profile is the most essential part of your natural hair journey.
